Radiactive Iodine is a major constituent of both nuclear power plant accidents and nuclear bomb explosions, and can travel hundreds of miles on the winds. Thyroid cancer attributable to the nuclear accident at Chernobyl "has been documented up to 500 km from the accident site." Even very small amounts of inhaled or ingested radioactive iodine can do grave damage as it will always concentrate, and be retained, in the thyroid gland.
Potassium Iodate (KIO3) contains iodine salts. If it is taken before radiation exposure the iodine in KIO3 will saturate (fill up) a persons thyroid gland with safe stable iodine so that there is no room for the radioactive iodine. Thus any radioactive iodine that is ingested or inhaled is quickly eliminated by the kidneys.
